Vineyard
Located in the
middle part of the northern Santa Rita Hills, Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard is
farmed by the renowned viticulturist Ben Merz who is widely recognized as the
best in the Santa Rita Hills. The vineyard is owned by Foley Estates and it is
one of the most picturesque vineyards around. Adding to the site’s pedigree is
its location next to such renowned vineyards as Babcock and Melville. The soils
at Rancho Santa Rosa are sandy, and the row orientations are predominantly
north/south. The
clone 4 Chardonnay from Rancho Santa Rosa offers a crisp and vibrant expression
of the varietal with lovely aromatics and pure fruit elements.
2013 Vintage
As a winemaker,
this is the kind of vintage I dream about. We had a terrific fruit set and
Mother Nature provided perfect weather for ripening. A rainless end to the
season allowed me to pick exactly when I wanted, with perfect ripeness across
the board.
Winemaking
This
wine was fermented cold and slowly in stainless steel to preserve the
expression of the fruit. Throughout the winemaking process, my goal was to
remain as true to the varietal and vineyard as possible. After being inoculated
with DV 10 yeast, no adjustments were made and no malolactic fermentation took
place. At the end of primary fermentation the wine was transferred to neutral
French Oak barrels where is aged on the lees for 12 months.
Tasting Notes
In my opinion
this might be the best Chardonnay I have produced to date. From its brilliant
straw color to its head-turning pear, pineapple, citrus blossom and mineral
aromatics, this is a vibrant and exciting Chardonnay. Crisp youthful acidity
makes the flavors sing across the palate. The vineyard achieved an effortless
balance between sugar and acid that allows the multidimensionality of this
elegant Chardonnay to take center stage.
Alcohol: 13.9%
Cases Produced: 100
