Vineyard
Larner Vineyard was founded by Stevan and Christine Larner in 1997, and today the property is managed by a second generation of the Larner family with the help of renowned vineyard manager Ruben Solorzano. Our section of Syrah is grown at the top of a beautiful south-facing hillside, which gives a perfect exposure. The vines rest on a seven-foot-deep bed of sand with clay pan underneath. The clone is 174, which was isolated from the Northern Rhône. We love this clone’s expressive smoke and meat aromatics, as well as its richness, texture, minerality and acid structure. The name La Paloma is the name the family has given our block. It is Stevan and Christine’s favorite beach in France, and the sand that hosts our vines reminds them of that special place.
Winemaking
This wine underwent a seven-day cold soak followed by BM-45 yeast inoculation (one of my favorites). There were three weeks of skin contact before pressing into a beautiful one-year-old Ermitage barrel, where it aged gracefully for 18 months.
